About Us

The name Kawosi was born as an idea during the Covid-19 lockdown when the entire world was at a literal standstill. The funny thing is, during the first hard lock down, you couldn’t even buy a pair of socks from the shops, even if you wanted to. Kawosi is slang in townships for "socks" and we grew up in these parts & named the brand Kawosi as a tribute to the culture of the streets of South Africa. Globally we have so many reframes of luxury brands that are developed around cultures or languages of their origin (vetements - which translates to "clothes" in French).

For us, it's about creating something that can travel the world and take with it a piece of our culture back here at home and have people abroad debate amongst themselves how to correctly pronounce the name; just like how we debate what the proper pronunciation of Moët, or Givenchy is. South African culture forms the DNA of the brand and that's why it's called Kawosi.
